My Writing Updates [#1]

I like to say that I’m a writer, when in reality I write 7% of the time and procrastinate the other 93%.

Also, this may or may not be a new thing/feature?/(idk what to call it) I shall do to encourage myself to ACTUALLY WRITE MY STORY.* And also because May said I should write a novel. But I am like .07% finished with THAT so I’m just going to do a post about it instead. #compromise??? I’m also going to include a couple of snippets from my outline because WHY NOT.

And also, one of my goals for the new year was to post more about writing. And.. yep, I CANNOT check that off the list… until now, I guess. And I guess one of the main reasons I didn’t really post about was because I have an irrational fear of others stealing my story** even though it’s not even that good.

So, my main project right now is called The Night of Shattered Stars, and I call it TNOSS for short because it’s a long name***.

I started writing my story back when I DIDN’T discover outlining but I decided to outline. Because that is what professional writers do. And I’m totally not a professional writer. This is supposed to be YA, BUT WHO KNOWS WHAT KIND OF LEVEL I WRITE AT. CHILDREN’S BOOKS, PROBABLY.

Oh, and btw I took the featured photo. IT WAS SO MUCH WORK, holding a pen with my hand.

*I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW THIS WILL BE AN UPDATE THING BECAUSE BY THE NEXT TIME I POST I WILL PROBABLY HAVE DONE 0% MORE ON MY PROJECT??
**But omg it happened once!! Except it wasn’t really stealing? I had this idea about a girl who’s losing her memory. And like half a year later, I saw the blurb on Netgalley and was like WAIT WHAT. So, uh.. I can’t write that anymore! The book is called The Memory Book if you want to read it! #shestolemyidea #justkidding
***OMG it’s five words. It’s too long for my brain to process fully.

Characters

The main character is Aasani (her name is the name of one of the stars in the Virgo constellation, according to this random wikia I found online #itotallydidmyresearch Also, it’s just a really pretty name.)

Aasani’s basic description:

  • She’s a thief.
  • She starts off living in a city, stealing to survive*.
  • Also, she’s fiery and isn’t that good at fighting and apparently not stealing either. BECAUSE SHE GOT CAUGHT.
  • Wait WHAT IS SHE GOOD AT?
  • eh, I’ll figure that out later.

I’m writing this from first person past tense** because I like to get into the character’s head more.

There are other characters too. A guy named Noah (I might change his name) and Aeta and Zinka. And none of those names have meaning because I was too lazy to pick out meaningful ones except for the one for my main character. I just made them up! (Hopefully they sound authentic??? #seehowprofessionalIam??) Except for Noah. That’s already a kinda common name.

*I just realized this has Aladdin vibes?? I DIDN’T DO IT ON PURPOSE.
**But I might change! I am a very indecisive worm*** so WHO KNOWS.
***But seriously, once I took like 10 minutes to choose whether or not to buy something at Dollar Tree. Spoiler: I ended up buying the gummy bears.

Plot

So basically it takes place in a fictional (Arabian-like, maybe?) desert and the stars are magic/sources of power. And I’m not going to reveal anymore except for in the blurb thing.

And the story starts out with Aasani trying to steal a dagger. Emphasis on TRYING.

And… I will include a blurby thing but I’m really bad at pitching things to others so PREPARE TO BE DISAPPOINTED.

A thief’s worst nightmare… is getting caught.
Aasani lives in the city, surviving only by thievery. Until she can’t. When Aasani tries to steal a dagger from the market, she’s caught. And hauled off the prison.
When the rebellion comes knocking on the doors of the her cell, Aasani faces two choices: lie about being in the rebellion and be released from the prison, or stay there and possibly never come out.
An intense story taking place in an Arabian-esque desert, where there’s nowhere to hide but the sand.

ALSO I TRIED TO BLOCKQUOTE THIS SO IT LOOKS DEFINED OR WHATEVER BUT IT DOESN’T SHOW UP LIKE THAT ON THE ACTUAL POST??? #whatevenwordpress

Like, look at how it looks in the drafting stage!!! LOOK AT THIS. blockquote example

Like, maybe I should just upload a picture instead of TRYING TO FORMAT HELP PLEASE. Also, this picture is one of my former drafts of the blurb and I don’t want to take another screenshot because IT’S TOO MUCH WORK on WINDOWS. #lazy

Snippets

So, here are some snippets! Of my outline. Not my draft because I am like 0% finished with that, how productive do you even think I am??

And I like to pretend I’m funny? My outlines are probably funnier (if they even are funny?? They’re more random than anything else.) than my story itself, let’s be honest here. I am SO BAD at writing humorous scenes WHAT EVEN.

And well, these snippets are not really examples of my writing but more examples of my trying to be hilarious while writing my outline. Also I kept on misspelling ‘snippet’ as ‘snipped’ for some reason?? THEY HAVE SIMILAR MEANINGS, OK?

TNOSS Snippet #1
#usedtoomanyhashtags
TNOSS Snippet 2
AS YOU CAN SEE I DON’T USE CAPS LOCK THAT MUCH
tnoss snippet 4
This is an example of me trying to be gory! But kind of failing?
tnoss snippet 5
BUT IS THIS NOT TRUE???
TNOSS Snippet 6
As you can see, us writers are very indecisive.

So… yeah, those are all of my snippets. And all of them were about my writing failures problems rather than focusing on my actual story, #oops.

And… I do not know what else to say, so I’m just going to start my closer.

This post is almost one thousand words??? Is this normal length for posts because I didn’t realize…

Pinterest Board

Oh, I forgot, but I also made a Pinterest board, here: (There are only like 13 pins but whatEVER. I’ll add more later.)

So, do you write? TELL ME YOUR PREMISE. Are your outlines as random and weird as mine are? Probably not.

  1. Ahhhh I always love reading posts about writing! I’m no writer myself although I’ve been hit with tons of inspiration lately so I should probably write down my ideas before I forget them again 🙈
But I love seeing how other bloggers come up with ideas, plots, characters etc and reading their snippets 😍😍😍 yours are absolutely hilarious and remind me of myself whenever I first write a blog post lol.
Your story sounds really cool (and it does give me Aladdin vibes WHICH IS EVEN COOLER) 💜

  2. Your story sounds awesome! I’m currently writing (read: I’m currently procrastinating writing) my first novel which I named Bright Stars Burn Fast and it’s about a girl who lost her mother and now becomes friends with a boy. I don’t know how to explain the story in a few sentences so I’m just going to keep it like that lol.
I love the aesthetics (to be honest I’m more often busy with aesthetics boards than with writing haha)

  3. Your story SOUNDS SO CAKING AWESOME I JUST WANNA DIE! I can totally relate with the whole 3% writing and the rest talking about writing and faffing about, procrastinating. #writer’s life. I don’t know this reminds me of Rebel Of The Sands expect this SOUNDS SO MUCH MORE AWESOME. I have some questions. ARE YOU WRITING THIS BECAUSE ME = DESPERATE TO READ. *Correction – dying to read.YOUR OUTLINE IS HILARIOUS, I CAN’T EVEN? DO YOU KNOW ANY REMEDIES FOR CAPS LOCK KEYS?
Your Pinterest board is so aesthetically pleasing, okay??

  4. Your story sounds so cool, and I especially love the title! I have not worked on anything I’ve been writing for about a month now, but I keep telling myself than June 1st is the day I’ll go back, just because the beginning of a month seems like a good time to force myself to stop procrastinating and actually do something. Honestly, I don’t even know what my novel is about anymore, because I don’t do outlines and just make stuff up as I go along. There’s a magical inn and a clumsy prince though, and I’m thinking about throwing in some pirates. I also had a side project where I was writing about magical creatures (essentially writing the story that I wished Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them turned out to be). Also, have you ever done NaNoWriMo? I find that always helps me not procrastinate on writing.

      1. They have a summer version of NaNoWriMo too, actually! It’s in July, called Camp NaNoWriMo, so you could always do it then if you don’t want to wait for November. I’m actually planning on doing it then too!

  5. I love the main character’s name; it’s gorgeous! You’ve got some awesome ideas for this story too! 😍 Haha when people ask, I’m always like yeah I write, when really it’s just these random blurbs of inspiration I get once a month 😂 But yeah, wow you should keep writing, you seem really really good at it!!

  6. AH I love reading writing updates posts! I’ve been wanted to do them too because I think it would motivate me to actually finish some books I’ve started and become less #lazy but I also have a huge fear that people will steal what I am writing about!!!!! I can’t wait to read more of your updates and see your story grow though 😀 ❤

    1. Ok I guess I didn’t see this comment because WordPress HAS FAILED ME, APPARENTLY so I’m sorry for the late reply but:
YEAH I KNOW RIGHT?? YOU SHOULD DO THEM. DO THEM. And SAME about the stealing fear?? But you know what? Once it’s on the internet YOU HAVE OFFICIALLY CLAIMED IT. KIND OF. I don’t know, actually.
      THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤❤

  7. OH MY GOSH. First of all let me say you are an amazing writer because this sounds AWESOME!!! Second of all, the blockquote doesn’t look like that because it’s the theme. 😛 Third, HOLY COW how are you so witty??? I mean, I’m still planning out my novel so I can’t outline yet (because I barely have a plot, the characters haven’t been developed, and the setting is nonexistent) but I hope that when I DO outline, I’m funny like you. I tried to be funny in my outline… and it didn’t work. Well most of it. Some lines were #great.

YOU’RE GOING TO LET ME READ THIS, CORRECT???

(PS omg I am in awe of your one-handed photo-taking skills.)

    1. Ahhhhh THANK YOU! I definitely need them xD

and AHHH THANK YOU AGAIN!! I don’t know much honestly, but here are a couple of tips:
