Why You Shouldn’t Feel Guilty About Your Ideas

This has been on my mind a lot recently. Well, fine, not recently, unless you call the last… month recently.

I HAVE IDEAS (SOMETIMES) FOR BLOG POSTS. But the thing is, sometimes I’m too nervous to write them.

Why? Because the idea of my blog post is sometimes somewhat similar to other people’s blog posts that I have read. Basically, I think of the idea, and I start writing the blog post in my head*… and then I remember that someone else has written a blog post somewhat similar to my idea.

And I find myself getting annoyed… at MYSELF. Because #no. That is not WHY I thought of the blog post idea, and it had nothing whatsoever to do with the making of my idea, so why should I feel guilty?

Yet I do.

So I’m going to write a blog post about this to convince YOU**, (if you are a blogger human) that you shouldn’t feel guilty if you have a similar idea to someone else!

*If only I could write blog posts on the computer as fast as I write them in my mind.

**And also myself. See? MULTITASKING. blue watercolor streak

When SHOULDN’T you feel guilty about your blog post?

When Your Idea is Remotely Similar to Theirs

Like, for example, once my very good blogger friend wrote a post on fantasy vs. contemporary.

But I was thinking about writing and the genres that you should write in. And I had a post idea! I wanted to talk about writing fantasy vs. writing contemporary* and the elements that you have to think about. (I still haven’t written this blog post, by the way. Do not steal it, please.)

I’m not stealing her idea. The reason I had the idea was BECAUSE of a train of thought that I had while thinking about writing preparation and things similar to that.

HOWEVER, I will probably either a) reference her blog post or b) change the genres so that they aren’t so similar.

*EDIT: I just found out from my friend that someone else I know already wrote this post… so…. *laughs awkwardly* I’ll probably wait a month or so, since my ideas are pretty different from her post.

When your idea is in the “general idea” section.

For example, if you wanted to do a post recommending books to another person, THAT’S OKAY. MANY PEOPLE do that.

SOME TOPICS IN THE “GENERAL IDEAS” SECTION

  • ARCS. There are SO MANY posts talking about ARCS and giving advice and other things like that.
  • “Book recommendations.” Everyone does these, okay?
  • “Favorite books” A lot of people also do these!
  • How To Think of Ideas. I’m pretty sure a lot of people have done these. I haven’t really read that many because I’m JUST that creative.*
  • Tips For Bloggers. Bloggers are ALWAYS looking for tips, so there are a LOT of posts giving bloggers tips.
  • I really can’t think of any more.
  • But you get my point.

So, if I wrote a post about tips for bloggers, that is NOT stealing. Because a LOT of people have tips for bloggers, right? Right.

*I’m also oH SO HUMBLE.

When You Have a Unique Point of View on the Subject

Fresh takes on points of view are always welcome on each subject. When you’re not just regurgitating information that you’ve read.

If you’ve read a post on say, ARCs, but you live internationally, of course it’s fine to write a post about it. You don’t even have to live internationally. Everyone’s experience regarding ARCs is different, and you should write about the differences.

Basically, you shouldn’t be regurgitating information on a post that you’ve read. You should be giving a NEW take on it.

Of course, usually it’s best to reference the post that you’ve read in your post. Because you GOT the idea for the post FROM them. blue watercolor streak

When SHOULD you feel guilty about your blog post?

Not that you should be feeling guilty… but you should know what constitutes as plagiarism and copying and what doesn’t.

When all of these apply to you:

  1. You got the idea from their blog post.
  2. You’re regurgitating the same information that their blog post has/

For example, if someone else had a post titled “Ways to Flip Pages” and then YOU decide to write a post on “Ways to Flip Pages,” and have the same information as them… just don’t.

HOWEVER, if you have COMPLETELY different information from that specific post, it’s fine! As long as you reference that you got the post idea from them, everything should be fine.

(And yes, I only had ONE situation for this.)blue watercolor streak

In Conclusion…

  • If you’ve had the idea for the blog post on your own and SEPERATE from someone else’s post, you do not need to credit them at all.
  • If you have the idea for a blog post, and the topic of the post is VERY general, you do not need to credit them.
  • If you have the idea from their blog post, but the information is same, it’s usually best to reference their post in your post.
  • If you have the idea from their blog post and the information is literally the same, then… don’t write the post and THINK OF NEW INFORMATION*.

It usually comes down to where you got the idea for your blog post.

*Trust me, humans. If moi, with 2 cubic centimeters of creativity, can have ideas, YOU CAN TOO.

Obviously, this isn’t the “rules” of the internet or the blogosphere*… but this is what I constitute as “copying” in my book.

*I AM the dragon/potato queen, but IT’S OKAY. THIS ISN’T A ROYAL DECREE.

Tell me your thoughts! (please)

Do you agree with me? Do you think that there are other ways to be a “copycat”? Do you like cats that are not of the copying type? DO YOU ACCEPT MY RULE AS DRAGON QUEEN????

  1. I ACCEPT YOUR RULE AS DRAGON QUEEN. *bows down*

Ahem I see you with your referencing-but-not-really-referencing. But yes!!! Please write that fantasy vs. contemporary post!!! And DUDE I so agreeeee. This morning I was thinking of blog post ideas and I was like “THEY’VE ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN AHGHAGHAHGH” — that would’ve been that “general idea” type. But you know. Fresh look on it and all.

There’s also something called intentional plagiarism/copying where you actually MEAN to COPY someone’s blog post… and it’s not very nice. Not nice at all. (Also I tend to be a very nervous bean so if the idea of my post is similar to someone else, I’ll ask permission. XD)

*ends this abruptly because i suck at endings*

    1. YES YOU SHOULD. THANK YOU.

Haha yes I DID REFERENCE YOU. AND haha, others figured it out that it was YOU.

I KNOW but I feel like IF YOU HAVE DIFFERENT CONTENT FROM A POST THAT YOU’VE ALREADY READ then it’s okay.

AND YES it’s horrible when people copy other’s post ideas… but I don’t think that’s happened to me yet? If it has, I don’t know XD.

*don’t worry MAN I SUCK AT ENDINGS TOO*

  2. I pretty much agree with everything here. If I end up being inspired to write a post based on someone else’s, I tend to include a link to their post even if my post ends up being quite different from what they said. Their post is still what got my idea going, so I think it’s only fair. 🙂

  3. Loved this post!!! And I agree with all your points! I feel guilty sometimes when I think of an idea that’s not 100% original, or when I think of one I think a few seconds after ‘I can’t do that, it’s too similar to others’ and then I don’t make a post on it! The struggle is real. But I feel much better when it comes to general ideas, and I don’t feel any guilt!
    Awesome post😊

    1. Thank you ❤ Exactly!! WE FEEL TOO GUILTy. But we probably shouldn't. Because all ideas have probably been had. It's so weird, though. Once I had a post idea about authors and another person had a post talking about authors and I IMMEDIATELY FELT GUILTY even though I shouldn't have XD

      Thank you <33

  4. I agree with you. If it’s a general topic and you want to share your (personal) take on it, definitely don’t feel guilty. As we all know, there are very little original ideas left, so there’s no point in worrying about it. 🙂

  5. This is such a great post, thank you for writing it! 🙂 I agree with you on these little “rules”. There are just so many bloggers out there, we are bound to have the same ideas and talk about the same topics. What matters is HOW you do it, because we all have our unique voice and spin on things that makes a blog post unique, even if it’s a subject that already has been tackled more than once. It’s hard, even impossible at times, to be original when it comes to writing blog posts, so many things have been done already. It’s the blogger behind that does the originality of it all 🙂

  6. AGH Why is this so relatable? i think of so many ideas and the next day I stumble across that exact post and UGH, it’s so frustrating.Sometimes I have a post idea and and then think of writing it, and start writing it all out in my head (usually at night) and then the next day when I try to write it…NOTHING? WHYYY? My posts and reviews work out so much better in my brain when they’re first thought up but then…WELL.

Okay. Sorry but the Fantasy Vs Contemporary was taken by May and the writing version was taken by Lia. (I’m sure you knew this though XD)

    1. HAHA YES IT’S HORRIBLE.
*screams* WHYY DO OTHER HUMANS ALSO HAVE TO BE CREATIVE??

Me: *yells at everyone* guys, be less creative please?

I KNOW I WRITE POSTS IN MY HEAD ALL THE TIME but when I actually write it down I only get… like, 300 words and it becomes a half post pile of smushed words.

Haha, yes *cries* I guess I’ll just do some other genres or something.

  7. Thank you! I needed this reminder. Just because someone else has written about something does not mean that I don’t potentially have something interesting to say on the same topic. I was actually worrying about this yesterday so I appreciate the support! 😊

  8. I feel the same way, as a new blogger I am worried I may steel peoples ideas because I don’t know how to post and I have been looking at other blogs to see what normal people do. And I was starting to get ideas then I was like “No Tess thats just like blah blah blahs post you crazy. THINK OF YOUR OWN IDEAS” I then read this and I feel somewhat better, but I always feel crazy and not completely right so that was a complement. Okay… this is awkward also I LOVE YOUR BLOG! Its very beautiful!!!!

  9. This happened to me… I was accused of copying another blogger’s idea for a post. They were both about TBR lists but really were quite different. Still I laid out to my accuser (a very lovely blogger) where I had obtained my idea and how I had come to post that post. I let her be the judge and felt I did what I could to address her questions. She’s still leaving me comments so I think I did the right thing. You’ll be able to tell if a person is copying others because they won’t be a first time offender, it’ll happen often. So over time you’ll eventually realize if you don’t right off.

Still such lovely ideas about how to address this problem as someone who THINKS they are copying others ideas!! ❤

    1. Oh no! That sounds horrible. I would be so scared TBH if I was accused of stealing someone else’s post. Well, it’s good that you guys have settled the issue!

Yeah, I haven’t seen anyone in this community really steal anyone else’s ideas so far, and I hope not to.

      Thank you ❤

  10. This is so true. All the bloggers have writing discussion posts for so long, the idea in our head had been already used somewhere already. And if any of my blogger buddies already write a post which I was thinking, then I delay writing it for some time just like you said, it’s our own unique take on the subject that matters the most.
    Love this post! ❤

  11. Usually I just think it’s fine as long as you reference the person- it really will be a win-win for them anyway, cos you’ll be driving more traffic back to their post *and* I don’t think that’s in any way stealing, cos you were inspired by it and you want to spread that inspiration 😀 And like you when you said with the fresh ideas section, it’s bringing your own perspective to it anyway. But yeah obviously it’s not cool to straight up copy! Great discussion!

  12. Hi! I love this blog post. I definitely can relate to the fear of “copying” someone else. Sometimes I think of the idea on my own and then read someone else’s post on a similar topic, and I have that debate with myself about whether or not to make the post at all… I love that you give some tips about when and when not to feel guilty. It definitely helps! When in doubt, I guess it is always best to link to the post that gave you the idea in the first place.
    Thanks for sharing 🙂
