I’m actually okay with the amount of books I read (spoiler alert it’s nine) which is an accomplishment within itself.

Okay what else do I put in this introduction.

This post is late (I was planning to post it on the last day of July but that didn’t work out) because I wasn’t able to take more bookstagram photos until today!

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore ★★★☆☆ [gr review to come]

  • Listen, about 99% of my friends were in love with this book. So imagine my horror when it turned out that, despite the lush writing, there are literally no plot at all. #salty

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee ★★★★★ [blog review] [gr review]

  • My third reread of one of my favorite books!! ❤ I still love it as much as I did the first time I read it.

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton ★★★★☆ [blog review] [gr review]

  • That twist at the end thoughhhh. Also this was so spooky I loved it.

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab ★★★★★ [gr review]

  • I don’t hate all of Schwab’s books!!! *rejoices*

Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody ★★★★☆ [blog review] [gr review]

  • This was soooo amazing and I loved it so much while reading it and I NEED KING OF FOOLS ASAP.

The Radical Element edited by Jessica Spotswood (anthology) ★★★★☆ [gr review]

  • Aaaah this was my first anthology and the beginning was really hard to get into but after a while I started really enjoying the stories and loving them!

The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta ★★★★★ [gr review to come]

  • I’ll just repeat what I said in my goodreads review. Our main characters are a genderfluid couple, amazing.

500 Words or Less by Juleah del Rosario ★★★☆☆ [gr review]

  • I actually enjoyed this, but I feel like it could have been fleshed out more and I wish it was longer, honestly.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik ★★★★★ [gr review to come]

  • Hi this is officially one of my favorites of 2018 and I don’t regret a thing.

physical book haul

Lovely, Dark and Deep by Justina Chen

  • Okay but a HUGE THANK YOU to the amazing Kav who sent me this!! They’re amazing!! Also I think the main character is Filipino (!!!)

Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria

  • Thank you to Abrams books for sending me a copy of this for review! I’m so excited and apparently it’s has bi characters going on a quest… amazing.

I actually mentioned A Spark of White Fire in my asian-inspired fantasy and it’s apparently a space opera which sounds AMAZING. (It’s also up for download on Edelweiss in case any of you want to read it!)

500 Words or Less has a Chinese mc and this is written in poetry which was really interesting to read! Also I’M SO HYPED FOR EMPRESS OF ALL SEASONS, A JAPANESE-INSPIRED FANTASY.

reading challenges

This month I participated in the #24in48 readathon where you’re trying to read for 24 hours in 48 hours.

I finished The Radical Element, and then The Brilliant Death (which features a genderfluid couple fyi) and then I started some of Escaping From Houdini!

Next month I’m planning to participate in #ArcAugust because especially after BookCon I have way too many arcs to read and sdkflsjf I’m so hyped for all of them!

(tbh in the future I’ll probably announce that I have read 0 arcs just like last year. I’m very good at readathons.)

Here’s my smol tbr list for ARC August:

  • Ignite the Stars (I love the Asian model on the cover and also this kind of sounds like Cinder? Which I loved. I’m just scared because Aimee hated this and her opinions are v trustable.)
  • See All the Stars* (The cover looks kind of mediocre but!!! there are so many reviews saying this is really good. And we all know that I trust the hype.)
  • Darius the Great is Not Okay (My first reason for reading this is because it’s an orange book and my second is because of this smol.)

Also, May and I are thinking about hosting a reading challenge that’s probably about a month long, and is either all during December or split during November and December!

We’re planning to make it about celebrating IPOC (Indigenous & People of Color) and we’re going to create a bingo card so if you’d be interesting in participating please let us know! We’re trying to figure out what to do based off of how many people are willing to participate. ❤

(It would be called #ReadIPOChallenge by the way, and we’re combining the C in IPOC and Challenge because we’re edgy.)

More information will be released in October!!

  1. Who’s soul did you sacrifice to ger your hands on an ARC of City of Ghosts???
I also have an eARC of See All The Stars (was that the title?) which I’ve been meaning to read for a while but haven’t gotten around to yet. I honestly don’t even know what it’s about anymore oops

And omg, I LOVE Brooklyn 99!! It’s also one of my *favorite* TV shows of all time and I just want EVERYONE to watch it and see how amazing and diverse and hilarious this show is!! I’m so glad you love it as well. (I love Jake and Amy too!!) Who are your favorite characters?? Mine are probably Jake, Holt, and Rosa (although I love them all 😭💗).

  3. First off, I’m super happy to hear that you enjoyed Ace Of Shades!!! Like, that book has been on my brain for over a year now and I always get super excited when people end up liking/loving the book too! And let’s not even talk about how much I need King Of Fools. Why is April so far away???? It was April, right?!? I’m old and forgetful. xD

Also, Brooklyn Nine-Nine 10000% deserves its own section! It’s a fantastic show and I’m so freaking glad Netflix Germany FINALLY added the fourth season so I’ve been watching it these past few days! I’m already dreading the wait for season five. *cries*

I always SAY I want to participate in ARCAugust but then I never do. But I should. I have too many review copies that I should get to but I also want to read all these other books first and more. Why aren’t there more hours in the day???

  4. I’m sorry, but I adore moths. You have permission to switch places with me so I can live in your moth palace, but maybe they are attracted to you so it might now work? Also I’m super jelly of you having read City of Ghosts… it sounds amazing!

  5. I was also disappointed by Wild Beauty. I agree that the writing is absolutely beautiful but yeah..I just got a bit bored tbh. I feel like I need to move Ace of Shades and Spinning Silver up my tbr pile because every blogger I follow talks about how amazing these books are!!

  12. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine has officially usurped the position of my #1 favorite tv show from Friends.” How did I not know Friends is (was) your favorite show and B99 took the absolute favorite spot from it as well!! I ADORE B99 SO MUCH and I’m so glad NBC saved it from its cancellation. 😭💓💓

I’m sorry you were disappointed by Wild Heart. 😦 The lack of plot (& other things) bothered me as well, and as much as I wish I loved Anna-Marie McLemore, this is now the second book of hers I just can’t connect with/don’t like. 😭

I’m super happy to see you loved Spinning Silver and Ace of Shades, though!! I can’t wait to read the former.

Also, congrats on reading nine books & thank you so much for including my post in your recap!! I’m so flattered and happy you liked it. 😭❤️

(I’d love to participate in your challenge, but I’m not sure how busy I’ll be yet. 😐)

    I hope you’re having a great August, Ju!! 💖💖

And omg I'm so excite to continue reading The Brilliant Death (I read the first 70 pages through BookishFirst and then slammed that exchange points for an ARC because GOOD GRAVY it was excellent)!

I think if the challenge was in December I could participate and it sounds awesome!

    Hope your August is fab!
