Book Covers With People of Color on Them That Just Butter My Eggroll (part i)

If a book has a poc model on the cover, it immediately has all my support!!!

But this is going to be a ~visual~ post that’s going to focus on these book covers that I personally find really, really visually appealing.

(One time I was talking with another irl bookworm about books and I mentioned that I care about book covers and they were like “you should judge a book by its cover!!” and I was like… okay. If you say so.)

I CARE ABOUT BOOK COVERS and it’s already been established in the book community that caring about book covers doesn’t mean that you’re shallow in any way, and I often forget that irl people aren’t as knowing about certain things like in this community.

The book covers that I’m going to include probably have been mentioned by me a ton of times already in recent posts, but I won’t say I’m sorry because that’s a lie and I am not sorry.

(edit: oh my god. I’m like 1/3 into inserting the book covers and I have like 28 books I want to feature, so I automatically assumed this was going to be like a 2k+ words post, but then I remembered I can do multiple series of posts. So this is going to be part 1, and I’ll also be doing a part 2 soon!)

(Also, these are in rainbow order so this post is going to be red/oranges and the next post will just be all the other colors.) (This is literally the longest introduction ever in the world. Guiness World Records, hit me up?!)

Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed [book depository / indiebound]

  • I just,, really feel for this?? LOOK AT HER WITH HER COOL FINGER RING AND NAILS!!! AND THAT CAMERA?? Iconic.

Internment by Samira Ahmed [book depository / indiebound]

  • I just realized that she’s wearing a turtleneck, which is amazing even though I hate turtlenecks (they are uncomfortable for me lol) and her hair is so pretty? DROP THE CONDITIONER NAME.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang [book depository / indiebound]

  • I don’t think? that it’s super clear that the girl on the cover is specifically a poc but this cover just has some *Chinese* vibes to it. Like, the red of the POPPY and the smoke? I don’t know.

A Match Made in Mehendi by Nandini Bajpai [book depository / indiebound]

  • The subtle henna shading on the brick wall is so… gorgeous… the neon lettering… iconic and instagram-worthy… the girl with he classy outfit… amazing…

Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali [book depository / indiebound]

  • I think I’ve talked about this book so much omg but you probably?? haven’t noticed?? so I’m sure it’s fine. But anyways, this pastel ombre!! The OMBRE!!! I live for the ombre.

The Library of Fates by Aditi Khorana [book depository / indiebound]

  • This is like, the only one I’ve read of these books so far HAHA and I actually originally won a Goodreads giveaway for an arc!! It was one of my first arcs I ever owned?? I think? Anyways, the ending was kind of amazing. I think that this was kind of wholesome and I expected romance, but there was friendship instead which was very cool. I don’t own this anymore, but this cover!

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton [book depository / indiebound]

  • I love the pink aesthetic of this book so much, and not going to lie… I am not a fan of the colors of the second book but I totally get that it would match the vibes of the book?? Also, this model’s cheekbones.

A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena [book depository / indiebound]

  • I never really looked closely at this cover, but I just realized that there’s a building reflected in the sunglasses and that’s so cool! I’m still not sure what this is about but I’m here for a diverse thriller-type mystery???

The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo [book depository / indiebound]

  • This ombre… you all know how I feel about ombres… I love them… I used to have an ombre in my hair and now I don’t but I want to get it again!! Anyways, more importantly, the transition from pink to blue is so smooth??!

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh [book depository / indiebound]

  • I will never fail to be stunned by this cover because those designs?? The girl behind it?? It just gives off such a subtle amazing mystical feeling and it’s what originally attracted me to this current-fave!!!

Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee [book depository / indiebound]

  • AAAAAH I slightly get emotional when I look at this cover but whatever. I really love the texture on the background as well as that cool outfit on the model?? Also, I feel like this row of covers really seem to match well, which is my one (1) goal in all of my posts.

The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad [book depository / indiebound]

  • Can we talk about how the flame the model’s holding doesn’t seem very cgi-like and seems so natural?? Also, the author is so sweet and I’m seriously anticipating this one.

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo [book depository / indiebound]

  • I’M PROUD OF THIS ROW OF BOOKS, and I feel like the bottom right path of The Poet X kind of looks like its part of the shoulder in When Dimple Met Rishi?? Am I just hallucinating?? Anyways, this one doesn’t even have that much color but it’s still gorgeous and I love it.

When Dimple Met Rishi [book depository / indiebound]

  • I really like the discreet lettering on the coffee drink as well as the designs on the model’s hands, and it’s just so cohesive and good?? I can’t even explain it, I just really like this cover. Maybe it’s that the coffee kind of matches the  orange shirt?

Okay, after finishing this, I feel like this is kind of a filler post and I’m sorry : / Maybe I’m underestimating myself and this is interesting?? (no)

Anyways, seriously, sorry AGAIN that my last post was a blog tour, but I’m going back to having two non-review posts between all my reviews!!

tell me your thoughts 2

Have you enjoyed any of these books or read them? Which are your favorite covers? Do you like the cohesive color order of this post?

  1. My fave books with POC on the covers:

    1) Mango Summer by Agay Llanera
    2) all of Sabaa Tahir’s books
    3) all of Alyssa Cole’s books
    4) Everlasting Nora by Marie Cruz

That’s off the top of my head but omg this entire list was spot on!

    1. Oh yessss I haven’t heard of Mango Summer or Everlasting Nora but I just looked at Mango Summer & the pastel colors are so pretty?? Also, Everlasting Nora looks really good!! Sabaa Tahir’s covers will always have a place in my heart, omg. And I haven’t read Alyssa Cole yet but I SERIOUSLY WANT TO, EVERYONE ALWAYS LOVES HER BOOKS SO MUCH.

  2. THIS DOESN’T FEEL LIKE A FILLER POST THIS WAS AN AWESOME POST!!! I can’t wait to read other parts of this series and see all the awesome covers! I agree that if a POC is on the cover, then I will definitely be throwing my support behind it.

  3. I love the art on POPPY WAR, it’s just so striking. And I know what you mean about WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, that cover is just so inviting! I finally read it last summer because the cover made me *feel* like this was a good book to read in the sun.

    1. The Poppy War’s art is so minimalist and simple but so powerful at the same time. And oh my gosh, that’s such a good description of how I feel about the cover of When Dimple Met Rishi!! It IS a good book to read in the sun. (Also, how did you feel about WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI??)

  4. there’s a uk cover of LH&OF with an actual poc model on it!! i didn’t even realise the wrath nd the dawn had a person on the cover lmao. and no!! this is not filler! THIS IS GOOD CONTENT. i read + own a girl like that and it’s VERY pretty IRL thought the spine is lowkey ugly.

    1. omg YES the pink cover is so pretty I can’t believe I didn’t put that in here?? I LOVE IT. Also, yeahhh The Wrath and the Dawn also has an alternative cover with a poc model but I like the red hardcover cover so much more. WAIT I forgot if you liked A Girl Like That (I feel like you didn’t like it…)

        1. HMMMMMMM okay that’s interesting. Also, I just looked it up and the author is apparently not muslim so that’s a lil ://
BUT THOSE CONVOS ARE GOOD. interestingggg. I LOVE the girl on the cover so much oh my god!! and it’s pink!!! and the sunglasses!!!

  5. i cant believe you actually took the time to categorized these books by rainbow order, you are truly, a queen.
honestly all these covers are gorgeous, especially the wrath and the dawn, the candle and the flame, and saints and misfits. i just LOVE pretty covers (yes booknerds are shallow)

the library of fates has one of the prettiest covers ever and i’ve been meaning to read it forever (literally got it from the library and forgot to read it oops) but you’re making it sound so good so IM GOING TO HAVE TO GET IT AGAIN IMMEDIATELY

also this is not a filler post, this is an epic post

    1. honestly how could I NOT categorize these bootiful books by rainbow order, may???? how???

YESSSS those are my favs too. and THE WRATH AND THE DAWN is sooooo pretty and will always, always be one of my favorites oh my god.

okay not even going to lie… the first 80% of Library of Fates is kind of… ummmm… mediocre (like 3 stars) but the ending is SO GOD

  6. Ohh the Belles cover is gorgeous (gorgeous as the book itself!). And Spin the Dawn has an absolutely beautiful cover with a POC model.

  7. Gorgeous covers are always so nice to look at. I was surprised at first that you didn’t include the covers for To All the Boys, but then I remembered this is in rainbow order, so it will probably show up in the next posts?! I mean, I died of excitement when I bought the first book, and not only because I was anticipating the read a lot, but mostly because I couldn’t believe I had such gorgeous covers in my shelves. Like, are my shelves even WORTHY of such beauty??? I was self-conscious for a while before introducing the two.
Recently, the covers for The Opposite of Always and Other Words for Home caught my attention for the covers and the cute typography, but also because of the lovely artstyle for the characters. 😍

    1. *that awkward moment when I didn’t include TATBILB* AAAH I’M SORRY I love those covers but, yes this is completely true: I adore the covers of that series and we are NOT worthy of the beauty!!

Ooh yes The Opposite of Always looks so so adorable and the spine is really pretty!! I also really love the pink color scheme in Other Words for Home, it makes me feel all the wholesomeness and happiness inside!

  8. aww I love this post and it was amazing! I’m glad you wrote it 🤗 I always used to be the person who was like “Ew I hate people on covers” BUT that, I realise, was because I’m sick of all the paranormal white-girl stock photo covers where they’re aaaall the same and tacky. These days?! We get GORGEOUS people-on-covers photos and I am so here for all the POC rep too. Also I love Tyler Johnson Was Here and The Belles is so gorgeous it huuuurts. And I love the cover of Children of Blood and Bone too!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. FDSHDH thank you Cait ❤ ❤ Also, YES, totally same to your experience about disliking people on covers?? I feel like nowadays, cover artists are able to show models so much more artfully rather than the stock photos with text over it!! Oh yes yes Tyler Johnson Was Here & Children of Blood and Bone are definite favorites, I love their scheme so much and the artwork done for both of those covers ❤

  9. I LOVE ALL THESE OH MY GOSH😍So many of these I have either read or have on my TBR, and I can’t lie when I say the cover didn’t influence my reading decisions?! (Although it was mostly about the story.) When Dimple Met Rishi is one of my favorites, it literally gives me the best vibes, and I love Saints and Misfits too. Also YES, ombre is actually the best. I really want ombre hair but my hair is kind of light brown/dirty blonde-ish and I don’t know if it would look good since it’s not that dark?? Idk but it just always looks so good on other people. Anyway, great post (no not a filler I adored it)!

    1. HEHEEE what can I say, pretty books are just more appealing to read? I don’t know! When Dimple Met Rishi is literally so adorable and was so easy to read, I remember just reading it while walking home from school :’) Aaaaah GET AN OMBRE ANYWAYS? Maybe get a belayage if you’re really uncertain about getting an ombre, because I know a lot of dirty-blonde-haired people look amazing with blonde belayage! (It can be really pricey, though!) Thank you so much Olivia ❤ ❤
