Why We Should Give Authors All The Love

I freaking love authors.

Authors really should be appreciated- and they are appreciated.*

Because let’s face it, being an author is hard. Probably. I don’t know, since I’m not an author. BUT I WANT TO BE. I also want to be a dragon, a book shaped cake, a bookshelf live-in-er, a Totoro, and a really happy dog. But author is higher on the list.

But authors have to actually write books- and they publish them!** And publishing books is hard! And it can take 10 years!

Also um… all of those shows that have kids finishing books and publishing them really easily… ARE LIES. YOUR CHILDHOOD IS A LIE.

*I mean, a lot of people agree that there can be a power imbalance between authors and reviewers and that sometimes authors can harass reviewers. WHICH IS TOTALLY NOT OKAY. But I’m talking about cool authors *finger guns*.

**But I also DO think that we should stop acting like authors are a gift from nature or something. They’re potatoes humans, too.***

***UM AM I JUST TRYING TO DISPROVE MYSELF RIGHT NOW.

They Are Nice Humans

Of course, this is assuming that they are humans and not just sentient potatoes.

Hey, I’ve talked to authors. On Twitter. But THAT STILL COUNTS, ok? I’ve tweeted them and like 80% of them replied! Darn the other 20%. (Just kidding. I still love you. Maybe.)

For example: Once I tweeted Leigh Bardugo as one of the people that I wanted to meet and she replied. REPLIED. AHHHHHHH.

Okay, let’s move on from my creepy fangirling.

Authors are kind and they will (usually) reply to your tweets if you tweet them, which is obviously awesome.

*whispers* Sometimes authors reply to my tweet and I feel famous by proxy.

Also, they’re usually super kind to people if they ask for help about writing/their books/otherwise!

Writing is Hard

Authors put so so so so much effort into pleasing readers and putting their best work out there. For example, diverse characters. Authors, of course, have to research in order to represent them correctly. And they also have to research to get historical facts correct. And they also research for… other stuff. #IAmGettingIntoTheSpecifics

And I don’t know if you know, but WRITING IS HARD. It can take up to several years to write a book, encompassing the actual writing, revising, editing, querying, doing more edits, and so on.

Being An Author is Hard

Authors also deal with negative reviews. And being a writer of negative reviews myself, it can be hard to deal with the fact that not everyone likes your book.

But of course, for all authors, it’s pretty much a given that at least 10% of the population won’t like your book. Unless the author is a writing magician that makes everyone fall in love with their book. If so, tell me who they are and I shall force kindly ask them to TEACH ME THEIR WAYS.

Another hard part of being an author is that they’re expected to come up with more ideas. For more books. And be creative.

CREATIVITY IS HARD WHEN THERE A TON OF OTHER BOOKS OUT THERE. You cannot have a 100% original plot when there are 8 billion people on the Earth.

Promoting Your Book Can Be Difficult

I feel like promoting your book can be really hard, especially if you’re a POC author or EVEN MORE if you’re self-publishing!

I feel guilty, because… I hardly read self-published books?? BUT THEY DESERVE MORE HYPE if you have any recommendations just throw them at me please?

Anyways, promoting books definitely can be hard- and even if you ARE traditionally published, promoting your book can still be really hard.

Hype for a book does a lot. I feel like the hype and preorders of a book really determine the success of that particular book, and it’s really sad that some good books that weren’t as hyped aren’t noticed as much.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean that authors should shove their books into book reviewers’ faces randomly, but it’s fine to promote your book and approaching reviewers IS fine if you do it kindly. (So, don’t comment on one of my posts saying, “Great post. Check out my book.” because obviously that means that you don’t actually care about my posts??)

Writing is Hard To Make A Career Out Of

Can we talk about all the unpublished authors? Because there are tons out there, querying and querying and not getting accepted by a publisher.

It’s also really hard to score a six/five-figure deal with a big publisher, okay? Even more popular authors often don’t make that much money, unlike what you might expect. A lot of authors are struggling to make ends meet, in fact.*

And anyways, us readers are really fickle and picky/choosy with what we like. Something an author poured their heart into could seem boring to a reader, or a certain clever pieces of a book could seem stupid to a reader.

THE BOOK INDUSTRY IS HARD OKAY.

*According to an author I know from Twitter. Obviously the Internet is trustworthy???

Authors Are Humans

Authors are sentient potatoes humans too. And no matter what, they deserve basic respect and love.

Also, random announcement to up my word count, I’m doing NanoWrimo in November! Are any of you guys doing it? Here’s the link to my profile if any of you want to add me.

I mean… I’m probably not going to reach 50K words but I haven’t done much writing lately so I REALLY WANT TO WRITE MORE. (That’s why I haven’t done any writing updates recently, by the way! There’s nothing to update on, okay? YOU’RE NOT MISSING OUT.)

What are some other reasons we appreciate authors? What have YOU done to appreciate your authors? Are you a sentient potato or a human? Is there even a difference between sentient potatoes and humans?

STOP TALKING ABOUT POTATOES JULIANNA.

  1. I do think we take authors for granted. As part of the entertainment industry, they are WAAAAY overshadowed by actors, who are also cool, but I agree! Authors are typically very nice people who work very hard and still take time to connect with their fans are we are ALL people. 🙂

  2. I am definitely a potato. I’ve been trying to draw a self-portrait of myself, but my face keeps coming out like an ugly potato, so that’s gotta say something. 😆
And yeah, I totally can relate to the whole ‘I-put-my-heart-and-soul-into-this-but-not-everyone-likes-it’ thing. Mostly because I’m the one that puts in the heart and soul and then someone else doesn’t really like. 😂

  3. I wish I would’ve known sooner that twitter makes it easier to talk to authors! I waited forever before getting on Twitter and now I love it! I love being able to interact with authors on there! Interacting with authors is also why I love cons and really want to go to BookCon this year (and I might be able to go epppp!)
    OH and yeah I’m a potato 🙂

      1. OMG TELL ME IF YOU GO TO BOOKCON! I’LL PROBABLY GO AND I’M SUPER EXCITED (but I also want to know if anyone else is going first)

  4. I am most definitely a sentient potato – and I think the main difference between humans and potatoes is the fact that humans can be really really rude while potatoes are the most adorable Hufflepuffs ever 😀 (wow that actually doesn’t sound stupid i’m proud of myself)

AUTHORS ARE AMAZING CREATURES THAT WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH ON EARTH AND THEY DESERVE EVERYTHING because without authors i would simply be an insentient potato?? like their books make me laugh and cry and just FEEL THINGS.

I always want to tweet authors but I can never think of anything witty enough and I’m also a very shy potato?? I feel really awkward when I’m tweeting at someone because ‘omg what if i sound really embarassing’ or ‘what if s/he thinks i’m stupid’ idk man i’m weird xD

    1. I LOVE POTATOES and of course all potatoes are better than humans?? so are dogs and cats and a lot of other things XD.

I LOVE AUTHORS AND I ASPIRE TO BE ONE BUT THAT’S PROBABLY NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. But yesssssss I FEEL THINGS and i’m sorry but i’m an insensitive potato dragon queen.

AHHHHHH I JUST ASK AUTHORS QUESTIONS AND REPLY TO THEIR TWEETS AND BASICALLY STALK THEM. I mean, just be !!! youself!!! yeah. no stalking. i don’t stalk.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, JU. ANYTHING. also, potato dragon queen? i’ve never heard those words put together in the same sentence before xD

OH OKAY THANKS FOR THE TIPS I’M GOING TO TRY TO TALK TO SOME NICE AUTHORS!!! (keyword: try.)

    1. i hadn’t finished reading before having to answer your question about where that gif came from. lol i got too excited. i do appreciate authors and all their crazy hard work! it blows my mind that people can sit and create a whole new world through their words! and they really put their heart on the line by doing so, because as you said, not everyone will enjoy the world they have painstakingly created.
also, i am going to try out NaNoWriMo too! i’m a little apprehensive about it because i haven’t sat and written steadily since college (not going to further date myself by telling you how long ago that was, since i think knowing that gif was probably dating myself enough…) but i’m mostly excited to give it a go and just see what i can come up with! are you going into it with a plan? because i’m going in blind here. lol no ideas, no outline, just going to wing it.

      1. Ahaha I would get super excited about gifs too. I know right?? WRITING IS SO HARD OMG and it takes so long. Authors deserve all the freaking love.

OMG HAHA I’m pretty much going to try and wing Nano. Also I might try and outline a little bit more?? WHO KNOWs.

  5. I really don’t get how anyone could not appreciate authors. They put SO much work into it, not to mention the fact that if there wasn’t authors, THERE WOULDN’T BE BOOKS!
I admit, I never really do anything to SHOW authors I appreciate them, because I’m shy, and don’t like attracting people’s attention. The idea of talking to an author is terrifying to me.
    I think they’re wonderful, and I certainly appreciate them… I just… do it very quietly…

  6. Oh my gosh, yes, yes, YES. As a (hopefully-soon-to-be) indie author, all of this is SOOO true! And I don’t think a lot of readers/reviewers always realize just how much work goes into publishing a book? It’s step after step after step, and once you think you’ve got those down you look a little deeper and realize each big step has twenty more little steps! AAAH! Soon everything starts to add up and you’re putting yourself out there and you don’t know what you’re doing and wow. It’s terrifying. Give authors some love people, they’re doing their best to give you awesome books ❤

  7. omg yes I adore authors, not just because they made up my book crushes and made me feel 4378634265 things, but because being a writer is SOOOOO hard, and writing, publishing, and everything else in the process is so difficult and they’ve worked so hard!!!

  8. PO-TAY-TOES- boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew- Not of course that we would do this to authors because that would be mean… and really really weird, but your brought up potatoes so…
Authors are the best! Without authors there would be no books and I would not be alive. The prospect is absolutely terrifying.
Um… I don’t do anything to appreciate authors except read their books. Also half the books I read are by dead authors so I can’t give them cake or anything.
I have never spoken to an author. My sister writes letters to them which is amazing, but I am a shriveled bean who cannot communicate with potatoes.
That is so cool that you get replies from authors on Twitter! It is true that we must remember that author are not actually a different species from the rest of us. We all have feelings and eyeballs and all the usual things.
And yes, authors do oodles of research. How.
This is a fantastic post! Authors are awesome and they deserve appreciation!!!!

    1. I LOVE POTATOES.

Of course we shouldn’t boil or mash authors… yeah.. I totally don’t do that in my free time…

OMG yes I know right?? AUTHORS ARE GREAT.

Oh welp READING THEIR BOOKS IS STiLL GOOD.

I am also a shriveled bean who cannot communicate it’s okay! I love talking to authors and Twitter and yes feelings and eyeballs are very good to have.

      Thank you! ❤

  9. Ahh I love all the author appreciation here!! Also such a good reminder that they ARE human. I think sometimes we as fans can demand too much though?? And then they get caught up trying to satisfy the fandom and don’t have time to write. So we DO need to appreciate our authors a lot and give them space to be human…or potatoes. I mean, I won’t judge. And writing IS HARD.😂 But I’m so glad they give us the most aaaamaazing books to devour! *twirls happily*

  10. i feel really bad bc i only read the hyped books now and ik it’s hard to get your book hyped even a little in the bookish community, and i definitely don’t read a lot of self-published books even tho i admire their authors??? but authors definitely deserve appreciation and love for all the hard work they do!!

  11. YEESSSSS PLS GIVE AUTHORS ALL THE LOVE BECAUSE THEY’RE PRECIOUS HUMAN BEINGS WHO HAVE TAKEN YEARS TO WRITE A BOOK AND MAKE IT PERFECT AND HOPE THEIR READERS LOVE IT AND THEY’VE BEEN HOPING AND PRAYING TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF WRITING AND THAT IS ONLY POSSIBLE IF PEOPLE READ THEIR BOOKS AND SHOW THEM LOVE. And I think all of us writers and and hopefully to-be published authors would want people to do the same to us amirite? XD
