Settings in Books That Just Butter My Eggroll (a rare occasion)

It’s not every day that my eggroll gets buttered.

But when my eggroll does get buttered, it’s a rare and splendid occasion. So I decided to share the occasions that I love the book setting.

Anyways, the title is a reference to the vine video “vines that butter my croissant” and honestly?? I’m just going to start titling my posts based off of vine title videos from now on?? 10/10 idea, definitely.

There are so many different book settings that I really love so here’s a list of some of my favorite book settings and basically a couple of examples for each that I enjoyed that I’m recommending to you!

Forewarning: for almost half of them I say they’re trashy reads so be ready.

asian-inspired worlds

I’m not sure if you guys know, but I love asian-inspired worlds?? I mean, I’m SURE YOU DON’T KNOW, especially from my asian-inspired fantasy books post??

(But I’m linking it down below in case you didn’t see it. Because I love promoting this post!!)

But anyways, I love fantasy worlds inspired by Asian places and Asian mythology/folklore! THEY’RE ALWAYS SO INTERESTING TO READ ABOUT and I far prefer them over worlds inspired by Western culture.

    

The Forbidden Wish is so amazing and magical and it’s an Aladdin retelling and I just love Aladdin so much?? He’s amazing and literally my favorite characterization of Aladdin.

The Wrath & the Dawn was probably one of my first books in young adult and it was SO addictive and I don’t think I put it down?? (Except I don’t remember. But probably.)

As for An Ember in the Ashes, I really enjoyed this novel but I didn’t really enjoy the sequel that much but I’m planning to reread it because Sabaa is a queen and I love her.

palace/kingdom grounds

I always love books set in the palace or a castle or whatever because I JUST LOVE ROYALTY and it’s always so interesting because there’s usually some good political manipulations and I LOVE POLITICAL MANIPULATIONS.

And the descriptions are almost always so vibrant?? I love it when there’s a beautiful garden and the best food is always there.

    

And I Darken is a genderbent Vlad the Impaler retelling and it’s so fantastic and Lada is a queen but it’s a big thick and hard to read? It took me a couple of days to finish it, when I can usually finish a book in three hours/a day if I read through multiple sittings.

The Winner’s Curse is actually the sequel in the series, but I thought that the second book had a lot more political intrigue/manipulation than the first one, but the overall series is extremely good and I’d recommend!!!

The Selection is kind of trashy but I did enjoy it when I read it a couple of years ago, so??? I feel like I wouldn’t enjoy it if I reread it now, though. But it does take place in a palace so!!!

the sea/ocean

No, I don’t mean the beach. I mean books set in the MIDDLE of the sea. Like Moby Dick. But not Moby Dick because I haven’t read that.

I always love those set in a ship because there are almost always pirates and pirates?? Are my favorite?? EVER??

And if there aren’t pirates, well… goodbye.

(I’m mostly kidding?)

But if there aren’t any set on a ship, it’s usually travelling and going to tropical and new locations and I JUST LOVE SOME GOOD ISLANDS, because a. they are beautiful and b. my lifetime goal is to just live off the grid on a nice island with wifi.

    

Blackhearts is another one of my trashy faves that has a mainly romance plot and I feel like I might get frustrated by the plot if I read it now? But it’s in the sea, soo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The Glass Spare was actually really good, a large portion of the book is them travelling from place to place, I think, and the main character is smart and fierce, which I LOVE.

Daughter of the Pirate King was actually almost one of my favorites (it’s not though) and those plot twists had me shaking.

the city

These are always so fun because just. THE CITY.

Even though!! They can be actually quite horrible in person and people usually scream at you or creep you out, they’re great settings in books because I love going to small locations with really great food.

Literally it all just comes back to food.

(ex. if you start with trees, then trees create books,  then one of my hobbies is to eat food while reading a book.)

Whenever I think of the city I automatically think of Ted Mosby and the HIMYM cast sitting out on their doorsteps?? It just COMES TO MY HEAD AUTOMATICALLY.

    

Warcross is amazing and wonderful and I literally love this book so much, god bless Marie Lu!!! I’m impatiently waiting for the sequel to come because I love Emika & Hideo so much and I need to know what happens at the end of the story!!!

I don’t know if you know, but Starfish really meant a lot to me in terms of myself relating to the Asian American representation, and it just felt really personal? I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH (although it can be problematic based off of the abuse representation).

They Both Die at the End is such a sad novel and it’s just about two boys basically walking around the city and it’s so pure and sad and wholesome and I just?? have so much love for both of the characters.

fairy/fairytale worlds

Fairy worlds are so magical? My favorite type is when the fairies are all evil and basically trying to sabotage every turn because usually the protagonist is much smarter than I am and uses their WILES in order to defeat the fairies/other random creatures and?? it’s great?

The farthest I’ve gone to being close to one of these protagonists is probably figuring out how to redeem multiple coupons in one order at Burger King when you’re only allowed to redeem one. But not important!!!

(Answer: the cashier literally doesn’t care.)

    

The Cruel Prince is actually one of my favorites!!! I love it so much and the romance was fantastic!! (Although it was less implemented in the story than I predicted.)

I really, really loved The Hazel Wood (also the cover is so so pretty and it shimmers and ahhhh!!) and it kind of transforms from gritty city to the fantastical fairytale world and the transition is done so beautifully.

An Enchantment of Ravens fell short for me in the amazing romance, because while it was interesting and I enjoyed it– it felt extremely insta-lovey to me and the plot felt a bit hurried? But the writing was so beautiful and atmospheric!!

schools

Look, I know all of us hate school and yeah, school is frustrating a lot of the time but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to read about??

Because usually, in a novel, they don’t talk about the tons of assignments they give you, all of it is just fun and baking and stuff!! So!!

    

Nice Try, Jane Sinner is honestly so underrated in my opinion because while it has raving reviews it’s underexposed, which just sucks. Jane Sinner is such a hilarious and dry-witted narrator that I actually laughed out LOUD several times.

Winner Take All was such a powerful and gripping story, for me, and although it’s lowkey another one of those trashy reads, I still enjoyed it and it was an extremely fast-paced book.

Vampire Academy is literally the epitome of my trashy read list, and I don’t even care. If I read it again, I would love it. Of course, don’t expect 100% originality and creativity, but I didn’t when I read it and it fit all of my expectations.
